Case Study: Setting Up Operations for Our Own Collectibles Business
Updated 2026-10-31
Choice Custom Collections is our own collectibles business, a small Florida company run by the same owner as Brilliant Business Building. It isn't a client. We're sharing it because it's the operations setup we know best, and the same steps apply to most small product businesses.
This is an educational example, not a promise of results. It contains no sales, traffic or revenue figures.
The starting point
The business sells collectibles. We chose to start with one category, coins, and add trading cards, comics and autographs later. Starting narrow kept the first catalog, listings and policies small enough to set up properly.
What we set up
- A website launched with the coin catalog first. Other categories are planned for later instead of being half-built on day one.
- Online checkout through Square. Payments run through a standard hosted checkout, so the site never stores card details.
- Simple, written shipping rules. Orders under $200 ship for a flat $15 with insurance. At $200 and up, shipping is included. One clear rule means fewer customer questions.
- Lead and newsletter forms. Visitors can ask for help or join the newsletter, and every submission lands in one place for follow-up.
- A collection-account portal. Customers can create an account to keep track of their collection with the business.
- Articles. Plain-English guides for collectors bring in visitors and answer common questions before they're asked.
What other small businesses can take from it
- Launch one category well before adding the next.
- Use a hosted checkout rather than handling card data yourself.
- Write your shipping and policy rules down and put them on the site.
- Capture leads from day one, even before you have much to sell.
- Give customers a reason to create an account so you can stay in touch.
- Publish helpful articles that answer the questions customers already ask.
